Retelling the American Revolution: Black Resistance and Freedom-Building in Virginia

Join the Gainsboro Branch Library, the Harrison Museum of African American Culture, and Public Historian Brittney Flowers to Celebrate America 250 on June 25th at 6pm at the Gainsboro Branch Library, 15 Patton Avenue NW.

As the nation marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, public historian Brittney Flowers will reexamine the American Revolution through the experiences of Black Virginians. Drawing on local records and historical evidence, she will explores how enslaved and free Black people resisted, moved, organized, and built lives within a system that denied them freedom—revealing how the work of freedom unfolded alongside the nation’s founding.
